Once again, the brave swords woke up in the dark cave. They decided that this was the day that they would take a look at the Tiamat Temple. They started to make their way due north, in order to hit the road the goliaths had talked about, that was supposed to lead to the temple.
They crossed the path of the two T-rexes a couple of times. Some were hoping for a re-match, and suddenly, they got their wish. This time however, they were prepared for what was coming, and the primitive tactics of the monstrosities were no match for the Swords.
After that encounter, the Swords moved on and found the road. They followed it east, arriving at the fort protecting the entrance to the temple further up on the mountainside. There they were greeted by fireballs and 15 dragonborn on raptors who came charging out attacking them. After dispatching the dragonborn, they decided that they were probably not welcome just yet.
They decided to hang around and see if the beholder and the army of mutated dragonborn would show up.
A while later, they heard something coming down the road towards the temple. They hid and saw a lone wounded dragonborn clad in plate come "running" past them. In his arms he had a sack that he was clutching. As the guards from the fort saw him, he held up the sack and yelled "I have the focus" in Draconic, which was greeted by cheers. Seconds after, the gates opened and some dragonborns on raptors came up picking him up.
Needless to say, the Swords were puzzled, but they decided to stick around. Later on, as it was getting darker, the portal suddenly opened right in front of the fort, and the mutated dragonborn poured out and attacked immediately, scaling the walls. The beholder came through the portal last, and hovered over the wall. Battled followed, and while the Swords couldn't make out what was happening exactly, the amount of fire, lightning and cold magic that was thrown around left no doubt that this was a battle of life and death.
A bit later, they saw the beholder and the army of mutated dragonborn continue onwards, from the fort to the temple. The swords followed at a safe distance, and watched as yet another battle started within the courtyard of the temple, with the far realm infected creatures pressing on, pushing the Tiamat-worshippers into the temple itself.
As the battled moved out of sigh, a huge cyclone of lightning and darkness started to form over the temple. It grew in size and intensity, until it suddenly and without warning disappeared. Then the Swords watched the beholder and at least 100 of the mutated dragonborns come out of the temple.
Thats when the Swords decided that it was probably best to move away and hide.
Shortly after, all went dark again...
Day 5
After waking up, the Swords decided that it was time to pay the halflings a visit. They wanted to try and cure Darik, and see if maybe his mind held some clue concerning this place.
Unfortunately for them, Carric managed to botch the ritual and kill the poor lunatic halfling. Which didn't make his brother very happy. So when Truxas let loose a few very uncaring remarks, Hunter started to poke his spear into Truxas (and the others). Even though it turned out that the little halfling was a very capable fighter, it still wasn't enough.
The Swords decided that it was probably best to try again another day and continued on to the goliaths, leaving the two dead halflings in their camp. They wanted to see if perhaps the focus belonged to the goliaths.
At the goliaths, they once again found themselves talking to Urgosh outside the village. The focus was apparently not from the village, and overall, they didn't learn much though, except that the goliaths had no real issues with the Tiamat-worshipping dragonborn - "We have a deal that has them leave us alone". They did however learn that some of the goliath scouts had spotted a hunting party of dragonborn not far north-east from the village earlier in the morning.
They figured that he would have to use the road in order to make to the temple in time, so the Swords decided to travel along the red brick road through the jungle. They rode hard and hit not too far from the temple where they knew for sure that the dragonborn would come.
Which he did of course. He turned out to be a paladin of Tiamat. The Swords confronted him on the road. They learned a few things:
- The focus belongs to the dragonborn.
- It was stolen from them earlier today by the far realm infected dragonborn
- The dragonborn, Captain Klir', had been sent out to recapture the focus, as it was important to a ritual the high priests needed/wanted to conduct.
- Klir' could garantee the Swords' safety if they followed him inside the temple, which some of them wanted.
