37th session

After spending a save night in the extra dimensional space created by Rope Trick and identifying their new toys, the Swords of Drahar walked back to the primordial temple, and took a look at the black metal door that was between them and whatever was behind it. A few twists with his lockpicks, and Targron opened the door. Behind it, they found a vast corridor (15'*45') leading further into the complex. As they started to move down the corridor, several of the Swords noticed that the stones had cracks and looked fairly unsafe. So they sent the rogue again to scout (he he). Targron found a big staircase at the end of the corridor, and seeing no danger, motioned for the others to join him. As they descended the stairs, which turned out to be almost destroyed, they were assaulted by about 10 ghosts and wraiths. Being split from the rest of the party, Targron kept his cool and killed the two ghosts he was facing, and then sprinted back up to help the other Swords, who were down to the two most powerful foes. After they were killed, the Swords kept moving on, going further and further down.

At the bottom, they found a huge double-door with a Vecna-symbol ingraved on it. Torn spotted that there was a magical field blocking undeads from exiting (even via teleport) around the room. A Wizard Sight revealed that a cloaked and horned figure was walking around in a huge dark room, walking between a enormous table and a black sizzling sphere of unknown origin.

The horned and cloaked humanoid turned out to be nothing less than a tiefling wizard turned lich. The Swords chose the wise course and tried to strike a deal with the lich, but they couldn't rationalize that letting him out of his prison was okay, so the deal never happened and they quickly found themselves fighting the lich and his wraiths and ghosts. After a long fight, the lich was killed, and the Swords found themselves alone in his lair.

There was a huge library, so finding the ritual and deciphering it took quite a bit of time (the ritual is posted in another post), but by the next morning, they were ready to head home and had even had time to look at some of all the treasure.

As a side note: The fairly comprehensive library of the lich enables all Swords to spend some time getting acquainted with the new world, and thus use skills like history much more reliably.
